Barts Health NHS Trust

Barts Health is the largest NHS trust in the country, serving 2.5 million people across east London and beyond. With a turnover of £1.3billion and a workforce of around 14,000 people, our contribution to the local economy is vital to east London’s population – we sit at the heart of our communities.

Barts Health is also proud to be part of UCLPartners, Europe’s largest and strongest academic health science partnership. The objective of UCLP is to translate cutting edge-research and innovation into measurable health gain for patients and populations through partnership across settings and sectors, and through excellence in education.

Our services
We provide a wide range of services in hospital and in the community, including the leading specialist Major Trauma Centre at The Royal London Hospital supported by local trauma units at Newham University Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital.

Our hospitals
The Trust consists of five local hospital sites in east London: Mile End Hospital, The Royal London Hospital, Newham University Hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital, and currently manages community health services for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Our hospitals offer a full portfolio of services to meet the needs of the local community, and are home to some of Britain’s leading specialist centres including cancer, cardiac, trauma and emergency care.

Our research
We are a leader in the field of research and in July 2013 the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) announced that Barts Health’s bid to host one of the new, Local Clinical Research Networks (LCRNs) had been successful with the new network established as of 1 April 2014. Our responsibilities as host include managing the network’s annual budget of £30 million and ensuring that the partnership meets its main objectives to make research accessible to patients across the area and to widen participation in clinical trials and research studies. This new network is one of 15 across England. Barts Health, working with UCL Partners and other trusts in the area are committed to maximising the involvement of our population in clinical trials and in the last five years 200,000 patients have participated in trials across our partnership.
